First Time Bowlers
It is very difficult to set out a set of guidelines to cover all aspects of starting to bowl as every individual has different skills and expectations of what bowling will do for them.
There is no substitute for any individual thinking of taking up the sport that actually 'having a go'. In this respect the club holds 'open days' where people can come along and try it out and we are always willing to arrange for anyone to come along and try for themselves. The club has trained and certified coaches that are always willing to help.
One thing that is important for any prospective bowler to realise is that what you see on Television is the absolute pinnacle of bowls played by professionals who spend huge amounts of time practicing. It is important to realise that delivering the bowl from one end to arrive within inches of the jack is not as easy as it looks - it is the same as any sport.
However it is a sport that can be played by anyone and we have never found anyone who does not enjoy playing or has not been able to play - every individual finds their own level - but, again, like any other sport you get better the more you play.
Bowls is, on the face of it, a very simple sport but this can be deceptive. On a competitive level it can be very tactical and requires great concentration. All these skills are easily learned when playing the game as, within a club like ours, there is the opportunity to play against all levels of playing ability.
The Atherley prides itself on being able to offer all levels of bowls from the very social games right through to the very competitive.
