How can I join if I do not know any existing members?

The Atherley is a private members club and as such is governed by a set of rules which apply to all members. These rules state that any new member must be proposed and seconded by existing members - this is fine if you are known by existing members but not helpful if you don't know anyone and wish to take up the sport.

For those who do not know anyone it is suggested that initially contact is made as set out in the contact us section of this site.

What if I am new to bowls?

Bowls is, on the face of it, a very simple sport but this can be deceptive. On a competitive level it can be very tactical and requires great concentration. All these skills are easily learned when playing the game as, within a club like ours, there is the opportunity to play against all levels of playing ability.

The Atherley prides itself on being able to offer all levels of bowls from the very social games right through to the very competitive.

Find out more in the first time bowlers section of our site.

How old is the Atherley Bowling Club?

The Atherley was founded on 15th April 1906 at a meeting of Directors of Southampton Football Club.

The clubs first clubhouse and green was at Atherley Fields in Shirley. The club moved to its present location in May 1926 and the clubhouse in Atherley Fields was taken over by the Civil Service Sports Club and remained in use by them until 1998. The Indoor green was built in 1968 and was, at that time, one of the few Indoor Bowling greens in the country.

Where can I find out more about the clubs history?

A published 'First Seventy Five Years' is available for those that are interested and it is hoped an update for the next 25 years will be available shortly.
